What is a Real Asset? Financial Terminology 101

A real asset is basically just an asset that has substance. A real asset can provide some sort of service or use to its owner or owners. A few examples are things like houses (which provide shelter), cars (transportation providers), machinery (service provided by creating things), or factories (shelter again for the service).
